Reframing shame into understanding (and relief)
If you’ve been feeling tired, unmotivated, heavy, or frustrated with your body lately, it’s easy to assume you’re not trying hard enough. But for many women over 40, the problem isn’t effort, it’s insulin.
And once you understand what’s happening inside your cells, everything finally makes sense.
Let’s break this down simply, without guilt, without shame, and without blaming yourself for things your biology is doing behind the scenes.
Your Cells Aren’t Receiving the Signal
Insulin’s job is straightforward: It knocks on your cells’ “doors” and says, “Hey, glucose is here, let it in so you can make energy.”
But when your cells become resistant, it’s like the doorbell is broken.
Insulin is knocking.
Glucose is waiting.
Your cells aren’t responding.
So your body sends more insulin, and the cycle continues.
This leads to:
- fatigue
- stubborn weight (especially belly fat)
- cravings
- low energy
- feeling “slow” or unmotivated
Simply put, your cells aren’t getting fuel. You’re not lacking discipline, that’s for sure.
When Your Cells Don’t Get Fuel, You Don’t Have Fuel
This is the part nobody explains: When your cells can’t absorb the glucose they need, your brain experiences it as low energy.
And what do we do when we feel drained? We reach for:
- sugar
- caffeine
- easy carbs
- comfort foods
- anything fast
Naturally, your body is trying to survive with the energy it thinks it doesn’t have.
This is why insulin resistance often feels like “I know what to do, but I just can’t seem to do it.” It’s not a mindset issue. It’s a metabolic one.
Why This Hits Harder in Midlife
Around perimenopause and menopause, estrogen’s natural decline affects:
- how you store fat
- how you process carbs
- how sensitive your cells are to insulin
- how quickly your blood sugar rises
- how easily you gain weight
Even women who’ve been healthy, active, and balanced their entire lives suddenly find their bodies responding differently. Isn’t it good to know that it’s not aging but a shift in hormones that’s changing the rules of the game?
The Hidden Signs Your Cells Are Resistant (That Women Ignore)
Beyond weight gain, insulin resistance shows up as:
- mid-afternoon exhaustion
- intense carb cravings
- feeling hungry right after eating
- brain fog
- difficulty losing weight
- waking up tired
- nighttime snacking
- increased belly fat
These aren’t moral failings. They’re physiological clues. Your body is whispering the same message: “I’m not getting the fuel I need.”
The Good News: Your Cells Can Become More Sensitive Again
Insulin resistance isn’t permanent. Your cells can absolutely learn to “hear” the signal again, and women in midlife respond beautifully to even small changes.
The most effective shifts usually include:
- Balanced meals with enough protein: Protein slows blood sugar spikes and helps your cells respond better.
- Eating within a few hours of waking: A stable morning = less insulin chaos later.
- Daily movement: Walking is one of the fastest ways to improve insulin sensitivity.
- Fiber-rich foods: They help steady glucose and support digestion.
- Managing stress + sleep: High cortisol makes your cells more resistant, and small lifestyle tweaks help more than you’d expect.
These changes don’t require perfection, just consistency.
You’re Not Broken. Your Body Is Protecting You
When your metabolism shifts, your body isn’t fighting you. It’s adapting. It’s compensating. It’s trying its best with the signals it’s receiving.
Once you understand why your energy, cravings, and weight have changed, the shame dissolves, and real solutions become possible.
You’re not lazy. You’re not undisciplined. Your cells just need support. And once they get it, everything starts to feel easier.
Midlife Wellness Tip
Add 1–2 cups of vegetables to either lunch or dinner today. Increasing fiber is one of the simplest ways to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce cravings.
