Sip, Scroll, and Learn (Midlife Edition)

Perimenopause? She’s like that uninvited guest who shows up at your house, raids your fridge, and refuses to leave. Suddenly, you’re dealing with hot flashes at 2 a.m., snapping at your partner for breathing too loudly, and wondering who stole your sex drive (spoiler: it wasn’t your husband). And don’t even get me started on the belly fat that appears overnight like Amazon Prime delivery.

And when you finally muster the courage to talk to your doctor? What do you often hear? “Here’s some hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Good luck!”

Now, don’t get me wrong, HRT can be a fantastic tool. It has helped a lot of women, and it might help you too. But here’s the tea: perimenopause is not just about your estrogen dropping off a cliff. If anyone’s told you that, they’ve only given you half the story.

Perimenopause = A Full-Body Systems Shift

Here’s what’s really going on: your body is basically remodeling itself. Behind the hot flashes and mood swings, your gut, liver, brain, thyroid, adrenals, and ovaries are all in the mix. They’re influencing how your body makes, uses, and clears hormones.

Think of it like an orchestra. If your violin (estrogen) is out of tune, sure, it sounds a little off. But if the drummer (adrenals) and the piano (thyroid) are also doing their own chaotic thing, you’re not just out of tune, you’ve got a full-on train wreck.

Doctors have a super fancy name for this: the HPTA-GLOA axis (Hypothalamic, Pituitary, Thyroid, Adrenal, Gonadal, Limbic, Ovarian, Adrenal). I know, I know, it sounds like alphabet soup. But here’s what you need to know: it’s your body’s command center for mood, metabolism, stress, inflammation, and yes, hormones.

So if you’re only chasing estrogen? That’s like painting over a cracked wall and ignoring the foundation underneath. Looks pretty for a hot second, but the cracks are still there.

The Bottom Line

HRT is one tool, not the tool. To actually feel like yourself again, you’ve got to look at the bigger picture, the whole symphony, not just one instrument.

Stick with me, because in the next blog, I’m breaking down exactly how hormones get made, moved, used, and cleared, and why that matters way more than just the number your doctor circles on your lab report.
