Sip, Scroll, and Learn (Midlife Edition)

From Hot Flashes to Hot Moves: Owning Your Postmenopause Power

When I was younger, I imagined menopause as some mysterious finish line. You crossed it, collected your senior discount (😂), and quietly faded into the background.

Thankfully, nobody warned my generation that we’re far too busy for that.

The more postmenopausal women I meet, the more I realize something surprising. Many of them aren’t slowing down at all. They’re travelling, starting businesses, learning new hobbies, volunteering, strength training, wearing what they like, and caring a whole lot less about everyone else’s opinions.

I have to admit, I rather like this stage.

Yes, our bodies have changed. Mine certainly has. My knees occasionally negotiate before agreeing to a long walk, and I now appreciate a good night’s sleep more than I ever appreciated staying out late.

Funny how priorities change. 😄

Maybe This Is Freedom in Disguise

For decades, life followed a fairly predictable rhythm.

There were periods to deal with, families to raise, careers to build, people to care for, bills to pay, and endless responsibilities competing for our attention. Somewhere in the middle of all that, many of us quietly moved ourselves to the bottom of the list.

Postmenopause feels different.

For the first time in a long time, there’s a little more space to ask a question that often got pushed aside:

What do I want now?

That can feel exciting.

It can also feel a little uncomfortable if you’ve spent years making everyone else your priority.

The Rules Have Changed (And That’s Not a Bad Thing)

One thing I’ve noticed is that many women stop trying quite so hard to impress people during this season of life.

We become less interested in perfection and more interested in peace.

We start protecting our energy.

We say no without writing a five-page apology in our heads afterward.

We choose friendships that feel easy instead of exhausting.

And somehow, those changes make us feel lighter.

I don’t think that’s becoming selfish.

I think that’s becoming wise.

Your Value Was Never Measured by Your Hormones

Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the idea that youth was where all the magic happened.

I don’t believe that anymore.

Confidence grows.

Perspective grows.

Resilience grows.

The ability to laugh at ourselves definitely grows.

Those things don’t disappear after menopause. If anything, they’ve had decades to develop.

I’ve met women in their sixties and seventies who absolutely sparkle. Not because they look thirty-five, but because they’ve become completely comfortable being themselves.

That’s the kind of glow-up I’m interested in.

Here’s a Thought

Instead of asking yourself who you used to be, try asking a different question.

If nobody expected anything from me over the next ten years, what kind of life would I create?

Maybe you’d travel.

Maybe you’d paint.

Maybe you’d learn Italian.

Maybe you’d finally take ballroom dancing lessons.

Or maybe you’d simply drink your coffee while it was still hot. (That one’s looking pretty good to me too. 😄)

Whatever your answer is, there’s no deadline.

This chapter isn’t about rushing.

It’s about choosing.

One Last Thought

Postmenopause isn’t the chapter where life becomes smaller.

It’s often the chapter where life becomes more intentional.

You’ve spent decades gathering wisdom, compassion, resilience, and experience. Those aren’t reminders that your best years are behind you. They’re the very things that can make this one of the richest, most meaningful seasons of your life.

So if you’re wondering what comes after hot flashes, perhaps the answer isn’t slowing down.

Perhaps it’s finally having the confidence to move through life in a way that feels true to you.

And if those are the “hot moves” this chapter brings, I’d say we’re just getting started.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Martine
