What Your Bones Need Now

Understand bone loss, screening, nutrition, and strength-building basics.

Bones have a rather unfair arrangement.

They are expected to support us through decades of walking, lifting, bending, dancing, and carrying far too many grocery bags in one trip. Yet they rarely complain when they need attention.

After my own bone-density scan surprised me, I realized how easy it is to focus on cholesterol, blood sugar, and menopause symptoms while assuming our skeleton is quietly handling its business.

Unfortunately, quiet does not always mean strong.

Why Bone Health Changes in Midlife

Bone is living tissue. Throughout life, old bone is continually broken down and replaced with new bone.

During the menopause transition, declining estrogen can accelerate bone breakdown. Age, family history, body weight, nutrition, activity, smoking, alcohol, certain health conditions, and medications can add to the picture.

The difficult part is that bone loss usually does not produce an obvious warning. You cannot feel your bone density dropping while you make dinner. For many women, the first clue is a bone-density scan or a fracture after what seemed like a minor fall.

That is why screening matters, even when everything feels perfectly fine.

Do You Need a Bone-Density Scan?

Current guidelines recommend osteoporosis screening for women at age 65. Postmenopausal women younger than 65 may also need screening when risk factors and a clinical risk assessment suggest increased fracture risk.¹

Those risk factors may include low body weight, a parent who fractured a hip, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, early menopause, long-term steroid use, and certain medical conditions. A fracture from a standing-height fall, unexplained height loss, or persistent back pain also deserves a conversation with your healthcare provider.

For now, the important thing to remember is that a scan is the beginning of the conversation, not the entire conversation.

What Your Bones Need on the Plate

Calcium usually receives top billing in the bone-health story, and it certainly matters. Women aged 51 and older are generally advised to get 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily from food and supplements combined.²

Dairy foods, calcium-fortified plant milks, calcium-set tofu, canned salmon or sardines with bones, beans, and certain leafy greens can all contribute. Looking at your usual intake before buying a supplement helps you fill an actual gap instead of simply adding more.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, but more is not automatically better. Needs can vary with age, sun exposure, diet, absorption, medical history, and current blood levels. Large doses should not become the nutritional equivalent of throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping some of it sticks.³

Protein belongs in this conversation too. Bone contains a protein framework, and the muscles surrounding your skeleton help protect it. Research suggests adequate protein supports bone and muscle health, particularly when calcium intake is sufficient.

A bone-supportive plate does not require perfection. It needs enough food, a dependable source of protein, calcium-rich choices, colourful plants, and enough variety to make eating feel like a meal rather than an assignment.

Your Bones Need More Than Walking

Walking is excellent for your heart, circulation, mood, and overall mobility. Keep walking.

However, bones also respond to progressively challenging loads. Resistance training, weight-bearing activity, and appropriately chosen impact exercises can help maintain bone and muscle. Research in postmenopausal women suggests exercise can produce modest improvements in bone density while also improving strength and physical function.

A well-rounded routine may include:

  • Strength training at least twice a week
  • Weight-bearing movement such as brisk walking, stair climbing, or dancing
  • Balance exercises to reduce the chance of falling
  • Posture and back-strengthening work

Balance training may not add calcium to your bones, but staying upright is a rather valuable bone-protection strategy.

If you have osteoporosis, a previous fracture, significant back pain, or concerns about balance, seek individualized guidance before introducing heavy weights or impact exercises. Bones benefit from challenge. They are less enthusiastic about surprises.

When Lifestyle Is Only Part of the Plan

Nutrition and exercise are foundations of bone care, but they may not be enough for someone with osteoporosis or a high risk of fracture.

Fracture history, bone density, age, falls, medications, and other health conditions all influence treatment decisions. Clinical guidelines recommend medication for postmenopausal women at high fracture risk, particularly those who have already experienced a fracture.

Your healthcare provider may also investigate possible contributors such as thyroid or parathyroid disorders, vitamin D deficiency, celiac disease, kidney concerns, or medication effects when your history suggests they are relevant.

Needing medical treatment is not evidence that you failed at food or exercise. It simply means your bones may need more support than lunch and a set of dumbbells can provide.

One Last Thought

Bone health is about far more than improving a number on a scan.

It is about being able to carry groceries, climb stairs, travel, play with grandchildren, recover from a stumble, and continue living independently.

Your bones have been supporting you quietly for years. Giving them attention now is one way of returning the favour.
